Part 03 · Reading Notes

Reading — passages & recall

Condensed excerpts of the two core passages, plus the Mediterranean lifestyle notes. The recall items below are quick revision — they are not counted in your quiz score.

Passage Excerpt · p.8

The Evolution of the Kuwaiti Diet

Student's Book, page 8

For centuries, the Kuwaiti diet was simple and healthy. Pearl divers and fishermen lived on fresh fish, dates, rice and a few vegetables — food that suited their physically demanding lives at sea and in the desert.

Then oil was discovered, and everything changed. Modern fast food arrived — rich in fat, sugar and salt — while lifestyles became increasingly inactive. Today, obesity and diabetes are among the health problems highlighted in Kuwait.

The good news? Schools, together with a programme supported by Kuwait Flour Mills, have been helping students build healthier eating habits — and studies show students have developed more positive attitudes toward food.

Passage Excerpt · p.18

Personalised Nutrition

Student's Book, page 18

General guidelines such as the food pyramid and "five-a-day" were created to prevent malnutrition — but science now shows that broad, general rules may not be as effective as we once thought.

Every person is chemically unique: our genetics, the trillions of good bacteria in our gut microbiome, and even our daily habits shape how our bodies process food. The new field of nutritional psychiatry even links food to mood — chronic inflammation may change the chemicals that regulate it.

The conclusion is simple: the best diet is not the most famous one — it is the one designed for your own body and mind.

The Mediterranean Way

Three pillars: Diet · Socialising · Physical Activity

For the past decade the Mediterranean diet has attracted attention — not as a strict set of rules, but as a way of life. People stroll through the town after meals, share food with family, cook with olive oil rather than butter, and enjoy plenty of legumes. Habitually sharing a meal is an important part of the culture — and you certainly don't need to live in Greece to live well.
